How you can celebrate Mother’s Day without Spending a Cent

 In savin g tips

Mother’s Day should not be about money but rather showing appreciation and love. Why then, especially as we grow older, do we feel compelled to spend a lot of money on commercial days? When you were a child you’d simply grab a piece of paper and crayon and scribble your mother a free kisses voucher.

We challenge you this year to celebrate Mother’s day without spending a cent. That means you can’t spend money either, dad. Here are a few ideas to get you going.

Make a homemade meal for your mother

Simply relieving mum of her daily monotonous duties is already a great gift in itself. One way you can do this is by cooking a meal for her. Rummage in your fridge and pantry and grab your grandmother’s cookbook. Enjoy yourself and get creative, just not too creative.

I bet you have flour, baking powder and sugar in your pantry, throw in an egg or two and some milk and voila, you have yourself a lovely cupcake batter. Pancakes only require eggs, flour, water, sugar and cinnamon.

Home spa day

This is a great way for fathers to show their appreciation towards their wives. You need only a bottle of good lotion. Prepare a bubble bath with rose petals, give her a gentle foot rub and perhaps your daughter can give her a manicure. Play her favourite music and give her a handpicked rose from the garden.

Make chore coupons

Gather your kids and make some chore coupons which mum can cash in whenever she’d like. This is your opportunity to really get creative and make a vacuum, ironing, dishwashing, cooking or some other chore voucher. This is extra special as the treat lasts much longer than one day and mum can exchange it whenever she’d like.

Explore the internet for any free events taking place in the area

Many venues have free special events taking place on Mother’s day. Go onto the internet and search for free events taking place in an area near you. Alternatively, you can make some of those pancakes mentioned above and enjoy them at a braai area or beautiful park with free entry.

Make a video

Many Smartphones these days have state-of-the-art video filming functions. Get together and think of a creative way you can all express your love towards mum and film it for her. Dress up, wear silly makeup, include the family dog and just let loose. Prepare a message for her and use an app to add mum’s favourite song in the background.

See, there are countless ways you can celebrate Mother’s Day without spending a cent. Have you some interesting ideas to share with us? Join the conversation on our social media pages and have a lovely Mother’s Day this year.
